O-nitrophenylcyclopropylketone is disclosed which is a key intermediate for the production of herbicidally active, selective, 1 - {[o- (cyclopropylcarbonyl) phenyl] -sulfamoyl} -3- (4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl) reagents. urea can be prepared by reacting dihydro-3-acetyl-2 (3H) -furanone with about 0.5 to 1.0 M equivalent of a C 1 -C 4 magnesium alkoxide at a temperature in the range of about 0 to 25 ° C, the resulting intermediate is reacted with at least one molar equivalent of the o-nitrobenzoyl halide, in the presence of a solvent, at about 15 to 35 ° C, the resulting second intermediate is heated in the presence of water, the resulting dihydro-3- (o-nitrobenzoyl) -2 ( 3H) -furanone is reacted with hydrogen halide and the resulting 4-halo-2'-nitrobutyrophenone is cyclized in the presence of a base to form o-nitrophenylcyclopropyl ketone. This material can be further converted to o-aminophenyl cyclopropyl ketone by reduction, suitably with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst. |
