titleOfInvention | METHOD OF PREPARING MIXTURES OF ALKYLED PHENOTIAZINS AND DIFENYLAMINES |
abstract | Preparating a mixture containing alkylated phenothiazine or 12H-benzo( alpha )phenothazine comprises catalytically condensing diphenylamine (III) with sulfur, acid-catalyzing mixture of (III) and a phenothiazine in situ with an olefin, and isolating. Preparation of a mixture containing alkylated phenothiazine or 12H-benzo( alpha )phenothazine (I) and the corresponding alkylated diphenylamines or N-naphth-1-yl-N-phenyl-amines (II) of the given formulae comprises: (1) reacting a diphenylamine (III) with sulfur (S) in the presence of a condensation catalyst selected from iodine (I2), aluminum bromide (AlBr3), aluminum chloride (AlCl3), iron-III chloride (FeCl3), antimony chloride, copper iodide and sulfur iodide; (2) reacting the resultant mixture of (III) and phenothiazine R<3>a(R<3>b)C=C(H)R<3>c (IV) in situ with an olefin (V) containing the number of carbon atoms in the added alkyl group (R<3> or R<3>') in the presence of an acid catalyst; and (3) isolating the mixture of (I) and (II); R<1>, R<2> = hydrogen; or R<1>R<2> = a condensed benzene ring of formula (A); R<3>, R<3>' = 2-30 carbon (C) alkyl, 6-12 C cycloalkyl, alpha -(1-2 C alkyl)-benzyl or alpha , alpha -dimethylbenzyl; one of R<3>, R<3>' may = H if; R<1>, R<2> = H; R<3>a, R<3>b, R<3>c = 5-12 C cycloalkyl or phenyl in one case, otherwise H or methyl; or R<3>a, R<3>b, R<3>c = H or 1-28 C alkyl. |
