HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors are used in pharmacy as antihypercholesterolemics. They are produced by fermentation with microorganisms of various species belonging to the genera Aspergillus, Monascus, Nocardia, Amycolatopsis, Mucor or Penicillium. The purity of the active substance is an important factor in the production of a safe and effective drug. However, the greatest possible purity of the product is particularly important if it is necessary to take the medicine for a longer period, as is the case in the treatment or prevention of high blood cholesterol levels. The present invention relates to a process for the production of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors of greater purity than 99.6%. |
