abstract 1-Carboxy-and 1,1-dicarboxy-4- (6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)- 2-butanones of formula (I) are new, where R1=COOM; R2=H or COOM; M=H or metal. Ethyl 2-ethoxycarbonyl -5-(6-methoxy- 2-naphthyl)-3- oxopentanoate of formula (II) is also new. Prodn. of 4-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)-2-butanone of formula (III) is effected by decarboxylating (I). Pref. decarboxylation is effected by heating above 100 deg.C in a solvent with a b.pt. above 100 deg.C
