titleOfInvention PROCEDURE FOR CLEANING OF FURFUROL-CONTAINING WASTE WATER, THEREFORE USE OF BACTERIA AND RECOVERY OF THESE
abstract According to this invention, the anaerobic treatment or purification, respectively, of waste water that contains furfural, and particularly the vapour condensate of the sulfite spent liquor thickening in wood pulp production in the presence of sulfate reducing bacteria and methanogenic bacteria can be initiated and controlled by the addition of furfural degrading bacteria. Such furfural degrading bacteria were obtained by proceeding from a source for anaerobic bacteria, such as swamps or bogs, or more particularly sewage sludge, with intermediate enrichment in a continuous liquid culture with the addition of a solution that contains furfural by means of a special technique, in which the bacteria (at various concentrations) are fixed in agar columns that are overlaid with a diluted solution of furfural, this serving as the sole source of carbon. On diffusion in the agar a concentration gradient is formed, within which there exists in each case a concentration area that is suitable for the bacteria. In this way, discus shaped, beige coloured individual colonies of furfural degrading bacteria are obtained. These are highly mobile, slightly S-shaped curved flagellate rods, and are similar to Desulfovibrio gigas.
