Internal combustion engine lubricating oil compositions containing as a friction modifier one or more borated long-chain 1,2- alkanediols of formula <IMAGE> where R is a C8-28 alkyl group, have been found to reduce fuel consumption when used in an internal combustion engine. The compositions also comprise (i) an alkenyl succinimide or succinate (ii) a Group II metal salt of a dihydro carbyl dithiophophonic acid (iii) a neutral or overbased alkali or alkaline earth metal alkylated phenyl and (iv) a neutral or overbased alkali or alkaline earth metal alkylated phenate. Preferably a mixture of such friction modifiers each containing an alkyl group having from 13 to 16 carbon atoms is used. |
