abstract 1-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-1;2,3,4-tetra-hydroisoquinoline (I) can be prepared by the step(s) of: (A) subjecting a N-¢.alpha.-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl)-3,5-dibenzyloxy-benzyl!aminoacetaldehyde dialkylacetal (II) to catalytic hydrogenation under acidic conditions, or (B) (i) treating a N-benzyloxycarbonyl-N-¢.alpha.-(3,4,5-trimethoxy-benzyl)-3,5-dibenzyloxybenzyl!-aminoacetaldehyde dialkylacetal (III) with an acid to give 1-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl)-2-benzyloxycarbonyl-5,7-dibenzyloxy-1,2-dihydroisoquinoline (IV), and then (ii)subjecting the compound (IV) to catalytic hydrogenation, or (C) (i) subjecting a N-formyl-N-¢.alpha.-(3,4,5-trimethoxyvenzyl)-3,5-dibenzyloxy (or dihydroxy)-benzyl!-aminoacetaldehyde dialkylacetal (V) to catalytic hydrogenation under acidic conditions to give 1-(3,4,5 trimethoxybenzyl)-2-formyl-5,7-dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (VI), or treating the compound (V) with an acid to give 1-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl)-2-formyl-5,7-dibenzyloxy (or dihydroxy)-1,2-dihydroisoquinoline (VII) and subjecting the compound (VII) to catalytic hydrogenation to give the compound (VI), and then (ii)subjecting the compound (VI) to deformylation.
