abstract The procedure for producing ortho and para-nitrobenzaldehyde from corresponding ortho or para-nitrobenzyl bromide, chloride or tosylate using the formula<IMAGE>whereby the bromine compound can be produced in situ by means of radical bromination of nitrotoluene is unique in that the ortho or para-nitrobenzyl bromide, chloride or tosylate is oxidized while heated and is supplied dimethyl sulfoxide in the amount 1-2 mole per mole nitro compound without solvent until all the dimethyl sulphide formed has been distilled.
