titleOfInvention BACTERICIDE COMPOSITIONS
abstract 1488892 Combating bacteria in the presence of organic matter ROHM & HAAS CO 24 Oct 1974 [20 Dec 1973] 21785/77 Divided out of 1488891 Heading A5E A method of combating bacteria in a locus contaminated or liable to contamination thereby comprises applying to the locus at least one bactericidal quaternary ammonium salt, wherein there is present in said locus organic matter which would inactivate, within a period not exceeding 48 hours, the quaternary ammonium salt if used as the sole bactericidal agent and wherein inactivation of the quaternary ammonium salt is inhibited by using it in admixture with a bactericidal 3-isothiazolone. The isothiazolone may be a compound of formula: wherein Y is (1) a hydrogen atom, (2) a cycloalkyl group, (3) an optionally substituted alkyl group, (other than aralkyl), (4) an alkenyl, alkynyl, aralkyl or aryl group or (5) any of the groups listed under (4) containing one or more substituents, R is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or an optionally substituted alkyl group, and R' is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or an optionally substituted alkyl group, (b) a salt of a compound of Formula I with an acid or (c) a metal salt complex of a compound of Formula I; and the quaternary ammonium salt may be a di (C 1 -C 4 ) alkyl (C 8 -C 18 ) alkyl benzyl ammonium halide. The method finds application in swimming pools and other aqueous systems and in treating surfaces soiled with faeces, eg. chicken or turkey coops, barns, sties and dairies. Parent Specification is referred to.
