titleOfInvention RESIDUAL OILS
abstract 1523597 Residual fuel oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 4 March 1976 [6 March 1975] 9365/75 Heading C5G A residual fuel oil, having a potential dry sludge content of not more than 0À1% W in the case of a viscosity below 1000 Redwood I seconds at 100‹ F. and a potential dry sludge content of not more than 0.15% W in the case of a viscosity of at least 1000 Redwood I seconds at 100‹ F., comprises a major proportion of a thermally cracked residue and a diluent and a minor proportion of a dispersant additive, the fuel oil in the absence of the additive not meeting the above potential dry sludge requirement. Diluents include cracked cycle oils, kerosene, gas-oils, flashed distillates and long and short residues. Additives include organic acids or derivatives thereof. Organic acids may be substituted and unsubstituted aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic acids comprising the carboxylic acids, sulphur-containing acids, phosphoric acids, the thio acids corresponding to the phosphoric acids, and phenols. In examples, the use of alkyl salicylic acid, salts and esters thereof, esters of polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride and amides of polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride are referred to.
