abstract The present invention relates to a method for determining the position of an object (100) being configured to move in an environment in which the object (100) is constrained to follow a defined network of paths by pattern matching between a pattern representing a track of a movement undertaken by the object (100) and a pattern representing the environment in which the tracked movement has been undertaken by the object (100). The pattern representing the environment is a discretized pattern representing the environment, and the network of paths being represented by a plurality of nodes (N1, ...Nn) representing positions in the network of paths, the method comprising:when a matching error (ME) in the current position of the object (100) exceeds a threshold ( thres ), determining nodes (N1, ...Nn) of the pattern representing the environment for which pattern matching is to be carried out utilizing a non-pattern matching positioning method,when the matching error (ME) in the current position of the object (100) is below the threshold (thres), determining one or more nodes (N1, ...Nn) of the pattern representing the environment for which pattern matching is to be carried out based on one or more nodes (N1, ...Nn) of the pattern representing the environment previously determined to be the position of the object (100), anddetermining the current position of the object (100) as a node for which the pattern matching results in a matching error (ME) below the threshold (thres).
