The invention relates to a method for controlling the speed of a vehicle, comprising during each of a number of simulation rounds sj: - a first prediction of the speed of the vehicle vpredßc according to a conventional cruise control; - a first comparison of vp, ed_cc with at least one of the limit values vhml and vlimz, where v fi ml and vlim; is used to define a motor number T for the next subsequent simulation round sj fl, and has values identifying uphill slopes and downhills respectively; a second prediction of the vehicle speed vpmdjnew over the horizon when Tberor of the first comparison in the immediately preceding simulation round SH; a second comparison of vpfedjncw with at least one of the limit values vmino and vmax, where vmin and vmax define a range within which the speed of the vehicle should be; determining and utilizing at least one reference value based on at least one of said second comparisons and vpredjnewi this simulation round Sj.
