titleOfInvention Method and means for effecting liquid transport
abstract A fluid handling device for handling a fluid to be assayed, comprises non-porous substrate having a substrate surface; fluid passage(s) having two, opposite ends; and absorbing zone(s) in fluid contact with the second end of the first passage. The absorbing zone(s) comprises projections perpendicular to the substrate surface. The projections have a height, diameter and distance(s) between the projections, and are capable of generating capillary flow, lateral to the substrate surface, of a fluid placed in contact with the absorbing zone from the second end of the fluid passage(s). An independent claim is also included for a method for handling fluid transport in fluid passage(s) (11, 13, 15) on a non-porous substrate having a substrate surface, comprising establishing and/or maintaining fluid transport in the passage by an absorbing zone (17, 19, 21), the absorbing zone(s) comprising projections perpendicular to the substrate surface. The projections have a height, diameter and distance(s) between the projections, and are capable of generating capillary flow, lateral to the substrate surface, of a fluid placed in contact with the absorbing zone from the second end of the fluid passage(s).
