abstract | Oxidation of 3~b-hydroxy steroids of formula (I) to the corresponding 4-en-3-one derivatives of formula (II) takes place in a catalysed process at a low temperature in the presence of a carbonyl compound and a catalytic system containing a ruthenium (II) complex. R1 = H or methyl; R2 = methyl or ethyl; R3 = 1-8C alkyl, 1-10C alkenyl, hydroxy, ester, acyl, ~a-substituted acetyl, furanyl or di(1-8C)alkylamino; R4 = H, 1-8C alkyl, 1-10C alkenyl, 2-4C alkynyl, hydroxy or ester or R3 + R4 = keto, alkylidene, carboxyalkylidene or CH2CH2COO (forming a spiro-lactone together with C-17); R5 = H, 1-8C alkyl, alkylidene or hydroxy or R4 + R5 = OCR2O (forming a ketal together with C-17 and C-16); R6 = H, 1-8C alkyl or hydroxy or R5 + R6 = alkylidene. |
