abstract A composition for controlling bacteria and fungi comprises an inert adjuvant and a compound of formula <FORM:1110848/A5-A6/1> wherein R is H, halogen or C1 to C4 alkyl. Preferred compounds are 3, 4, 6-trichlorocoumarin, 3, 4-dichlorocoumarin and 3, 4-dichloro-6-methylcoumarin. The process described comprises applying the coumarin compounds alone or with an adjuvant to protect materials, such as cloth, leather, paint, paper, wood, plastics and plants.
