abstract An interpolymer comprises 39.9 to 64.9% of a conjugated diolefin having from 4 to 9 carbon atoms, from 60 to 35% of a monovinyl aromatic compound having from 8 to 18 carbon atoms and 0.1 to 10% of an alpha, beta-olefinically unsaturated aldehyde of formula R=CH-CHO in which R is a hydrocarbon radical having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms. Specified diolefins are butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, dimethyl butadiene, ethyl butadiene, hexadiene, 4-methylpentadiene, chloroprene, bromoprene and dichlorobutadiene, while styrene alpha-methyl styrene, the vinyl toluenes, the alpha-methyl vinyl toluenes and the vinyl xylenes are specified aromatic compounds, and acrolein, crotonaldehyde, sorbaldehyde and cinnamaldehyde are specified aldehydes. The monomers may be polymerized in aqueous media in the presence of a catalyst e.g. a water-soluble peroxygen compound or a water-soluble redox initiator, with or without an emulsifier, e.g. sulphates, sulphonates, aralkyl sulphonates, alkali metal salts of sulphonated acids, esters and amides, salts of strong inorganic acids and organic bases containing long carbon chains, as well as the usual non-ionic emulsifiers-, and an antioxidant-, e.g. hindered phenols and diaryl amines. There may also be present mercaptan modifiers, buffers, electrolyte salts and carbon black while the polymerization may be terminated using hydroquinone or phenyl-beta-naphthylamine.ALSO:Paper is impregnated so as to improve its wet strength with an interpolymer comprising 39.9 to 64.9% of conjugated diolefin having from 4 to 9 carbon atoms, from 60 to 35% of a monovinyl aromatic compound having from 8 to 18 carbon atoms and 0.1 to 10% of an aldehyde of formula R=CH-CHO in which R is a hydrocarbon radical having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms (see Division C3). In an example a sheet of that paper made of bleached sulphite pulp and consisting principally of alpha-cellulose is dipped in a latex of 15% solids and cured for three minutes at 212 DEG F., the solids consisting of an interpolymer of butadene styrene and acrolein in the proportions (1) 52-45-3 (2) 50-45-5 (3) 45-45-10 (4) 60-35-5 and (5) 40-55-5 and of butadiene 50-styrene 45 and cinnamaldehyde 5.
