abstract Collagen foams are produced by homogenizing a collagenous mass or glue stock with water, freezing and thawing the homogenous mass, whilst removing water therefrom. The water is preferably removed by lyophilization followed by drying at 10 DEG to 30 DEG C. The pH of the homogenous mass is preferably 7, and the mass is preferably frozen to - 20 DEG C. to - 70 DEG C.ALSO:Foamed collagens, which are suitable for use as hemostatic materials, are produced by homogenising a collagenous mass or glue stock with water, freezing and thawing the homegenous mass, and removing water therefrom, preferably at least in part by lyophilisation. The mass may also contain another hemothroinbin or oxycellulose, one or more antistatically effective substance, e.g. fibrin, biotics, e.g. chlorotetracycline, or other therapeutically or diagnostically active substances. The mass may be hardened by the action of a physiologically harmless hardening agent, e.g. trimethylol melamine, and may have a coating of gelatin or soluble collagen.
