Apparatus for determination of small quantities of gases, for example inert gases, liberated from solid or liquid samples comprises reactor I in which the sample is heated, a purification train for the gases evolved from the sample and comprising copper oxide in heated tube 8, cold trap 12, and elemental calcium in heated tube 15, diffusion stage 21 of a mercury diffusion pump having jet 23 and a mercury return tube 24-26, and measuring capillary 28 in which are collected the gases entrained in the mercury stream flowing through the mercury return line After approximate measurement of the volume of the gases in capillary 28, they are swept into chromatography column 59 by carrier gas from line 78. The gases may then pass to active charcoal adsorber 61 which is sealed off from the apparatus and connected to a mass spectograph for isotope determination There is reference to determination of argon, krypton and xenon using helium as carrier gas. The sample may be a rock sample. |
