abstract Nitrogenous organic compounds of molecular weight 250-2000, containing a basic nitrogen-containing group which forms water-soluble salts with low molecular weight acids, are purified by contacting an aqueous feed solution of a salt thereof-containing organic impurities and inorganic cations-with a weakly acidic cation-exchanger in the alkali metal or ammonium form, which takes up the nitrogenous substance and the inorganic cations; eluting with an aqueous solution of carbon dioxide to remove the inorganic cations; and eluting the nitrogenous substance with an aqueous solution of a strong acid. Specified nitrogenous substances are antibiotics (e.g. streptomycin, neomycin, kanamycin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, oleandomycin, ethrythromycin, bacitracin and polymyxins), alkaloids (e.g. morphine, codeine, noscapine, papaverine, thebaine, atropine, scopolamine, ergotamine, quinine and reserpine), and procaine. U.S.A. Specifications 2,319,359, 2,333,754, 2,340,110, 2,340,111 and 2,541,420 are referred to.ALSO:Nitrogenous organic compounds of molecular weight 250-2000, containing a basic nitrogen-containing group which forms water-soluble salts with low molecular weight acids, e.g. relaxin, are purified by contacting an aqueous feed solution of a salt thereof, containing organic impurities and inorganic cations, with a weakly acidic cation-exchanger in the alkali metal or ammonium form, which takes up the nitrogenous substance and the inorganic cations; eluting with an aqueous solution of carbon dioxide to remove the inorganic cations; and eluting the nitrogenous substance with an aqueous solution of a strong acid.
