abstract | The invention relates to demethylchlortetracycline-urea-sulphate complex. The complex is prepared by a recovery process in which crude demethylchlortetracycline is contacted with an aqueous urea solution, an amount of a compound containing a sulphate ion e.g. sulphuric acid is added thereto which is such as to adjust the pH of the solution to a pH between 0.5 and 2.5 and the complex so formed is recovered or an aqueous slurry of the complex is further acidified to a pH of 0.1-1.0 to precipitate the corresponding demethylchlortetracycline acid addition salt e.g. the hydrochloride by acidifying with hydrochloric acid. An aqueous slurry of the complex is converted to demethylchlortetracycline in free base by adding an aqueous solution of a base e.g. ammonium hydroxide to a pH of 3 to 6. |
