abstract 1,002,447. Face masks. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 22, 1962 [Feb. 24, 1961], , No. 6957/62. Headings A5R and A5T. A filter-type face mask comprises a round preformed moulded seamless one-piece cup of resilient filter membrane weighing not more than 10 grms. and having an area of 20 to 30 sq. ins., the filter membraine comprising a compacted moulded porous layer of randomly interlaced staple textile fibres coated and unified by a rubbery water-insoluble sizing agent the air flow pressure drop therethrough being not over 0. 05" water at a flow rate of 30 litres per minute. In use, the cup is spaced from the nose and mouth and makers low pressure marginal contact with the face. The cup is made by moulding a web of interlaced staple textile fibres e.g. a mixture of drawn and undrawn fibres of a polyester of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid with viscose rayon fibres, soft pressing with heat the moulded web so that it becomes form-retaining, saturating the moulded web with an aqueous dispersion of waterinsuluble acrylic polymer sizing latex e.g.polyethylacrylate and polyethylmethacrylate latex with an alkyl aryl polyether alcohol wetting agent and an anionic sulphonated alkyl ester for rendering the finished mask wettable, drying the web, cutting it into individual masks, shaping the edges and adding an aluminium nose strip 3 and a securing elastic 2. Specification 966,855 is referred to.
