abstract Disclosed is a process for production of a butanal wherein said butanal is obtained by chemoselective C=C hydrogenation of a butenal in presence of a catalyst comprising palladium nanoparticles being immobilised in the cavities of a silica based mesocellular foam (MCF). The butanal yield in said process is >99% and the butenal selectivity is likewise >99%. The process is performed at a temperature of 15-30°C, at atmospheric pressure and at a reaction time of 10-30.
