Summary A method and a system for controlling an internal combustion engine in a vehicle are presented. According to the present invention, at least one future speed profile vsim = off is simulated for an actual speed guard for the vehicle during a forward section of road. The simulation is based on information about the road section and on knowledge that freewheeling with the internal combustion engine switched off will at least initially be applied during the road section. Then, based on at least a future velocity profile vsimIcEoff, it is determined a start time t -IcE start when the internal combustion engine will need to be started due to the need for propulsion on the vehicle and / or the need to brake the vehicle.
