abstract FIELD: chemistry. n SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a cathode block based on carbon for electrolysis unit for production of aluminium. Unit has at least one slot for receiving at least one cathode rod, in which there is at least one recess extending at least in some places in its longitudinal direction with at least one undercover in form of, in which, after filling the recess with at least liquid cast iron, the hardened filling material cannot be removed from the recess without destroying the shape, and wherein said at least one recess is located at groove bottom and/or slot grooves, said at least one longitudinally extending recess has a cross-sectional shape of circumferentially disconnected circle towards circumferential groove or open to groove side of circumference with neck, wherein the open part is made smaller than the diameter of the circle, and in the neck of the at least one recess the walls in the cross section pass parallel to each other. n EFFECT: providing a stably low electrical resistance during a long period of electrolysis and low resistance of contact between the cathode rod or cast iron and cathode block, as well as lower voltage drop at the cathode, as a result of which energy losses in the electrolysis cell and specific power consumption per unit weight of the produced aluminium are low. n 14 cl, 7 dwg
