abstract | FIELD: chemistry. n SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to lignin-containing coating compositions, methods for coating substrates using such coating compositions, and substrates coated with coating compositions. Described is a composition for coating a packaging container or container suitable for packaging food products, substantially free of bisphenol A, wherein such a coating composition comprises a mixture of (a) a lignin that is uncharged or negatively charged, (b) a crosslinking agent that is substantially free of bisphenol A, and (c) a solvent that is capable of dissolving the lignin and the crosslinking agent to form a solution that is thermally curable at temperatures in the range of about 130 to 250°C, to form a coating composition for a packaging container or container suitable for packaging food products.
