FIELD: machine engineering. n SUBSTANCE: method for clutch state estimation includes the steps of conclusion that the clutch is off, if the vehicle speed is substantially zero, the transmission of the vehicle gearbox is engaged, the engine is running and the clutch torque transmitted is substantially zero. Otherwise, it is concluded that the disabled clutch state is not confirmed. A method for an automatic vehicle engine stop comprises the steps of clutch state estimation using the method and engine stopping. The vehicle has a motor coupled to a mechanical gearbox with an ability to transmit the driving force via the clutch and an electronic controller programmed to evaluate the operating condition of the clutch.
