FIELD: chemistry. n SUBSTANCE: simple sulfone-containing polythioether having a fragment of the -A-CH 2 -CH 2 -S(O) 2 -CH 2 -CH 2 -A- ( 1 ), wherein: each A independently represents a moiety of the formula -S-R 1 -[-S-(CH 2 ) p -O-(R 2 -O) m -(CH 2 ) 2 -S-R 1 -] n -S- (2), where: each R 1 independently contains C 2-10 alkanediyl , C 6-8 cycloalkanediyl, C 6-10 alkanecycloalkanediyl , C 5-8 heterocycloalkanediyl, or -[(-CHR 3 -) s -X-] q -(-CHR 3 -) r , where: s is an integer from 2 to 6; q is an integer from 1 to 5; r is an integer from 2 to 10; Each R 3 independently contains hydrogen or methyl; and each X independently contains -O-, -S- and -NR 5 -, where R 5 contains hydrogen or methyl; and each R 2 independently contains C 1-10 alkanediyl, C 6-8 cycloalkanediyl, C 6-14 alkanecycloalkanediyl , or -[(-CHR 3 -) s -X-] q -(-CHR 3 -) r - where s, q, r, R 3 and X are as defined for R 1 ; M is an integer from 0 to 50; N is an integer from 1 to 60; and p is an integer from 2 to 6. Also compositions used as an aerospace sealant containing the above simple sulfone-containing polythioether, and a hardener that is capable of reacting with the terminal groups of a simple sulphon-containing polythioether are disclosed.
