titleOfInvention Method for assessing severity and possible outcome of retinopathy in premature newborn children
abstract FIELD: medicine. n SUBSTANCE: at the first stage of a subtotal vitrectomy, the vitreous body is sampled with its biochemical parameters to be analysed. In an air-free environment, the vitreous body samples are analysed to determine the following values at 37°C by means of an automatic blood gas and acid-base balance analyser: pH, partial carbon dioxide pressure pCO 2 , actual bicarbonate ion ( H C O 3 − ) n and BE base excess/deficiency. If the ophthalmoscopic examination shows signs of exudative-proliferative reactions in the posterior eye segment, with the vitreous body pH <6.9, the partial carbon dioxide pressure pCO 2 <8 mm Hg, actual bicarbonate concentration H C O 3 − < 2 n mmole/l and BE<-25 mmole/l, the course of retinopathy is considered to be aggressive with a low probability of the formation of adequate visual functions in the disease outcome. n EFFECT: method enables assessing the severity and potential outcome of retinopathy in newborn children as shown by analysing the acid-base balance of the vitreous body. n 2 ex
