The invention relates to a method for marking paired helical filaments (PHF), comprising reacting PHF with a compound and detecting the presence of said compound, wherein the compound has the formula in which —R— is —Q— selected from: —NHC (O) -, —N = N-, -CH = CH-; -P is selected from:; - T is selected from :; X represents N or CH; -W, -G, -are the same as indicated in the claims. The invention also relates to a method for labeling aggregated tau protein, comprising reacting aggregated tau protein molecules with a compound and detecting the presence of said compound, and to compounds of the formula themselves, in which the values of the substituents are as indicated in the claims.
