abstract | FIELD: chemistry. n SUBSTANCE: invention relates to biotechnology and specifically to aquatic toxicology and toxicogenetics. Disclosed is a method of estimating genotoxic activity of aquatic media. A synchronised culture of daphnia is obtained from the most fertile clone from a population of daphnia, except a laboratory population. Same-age, parthenogenetic daphnia from the synchronised culture are exposed simultaneously in the analysed solution (test), in the water (K-control) in a solution of a reference toxicant (K T+ ) and in the solution of a reference mutagen (K M+ ). The physiological state of the special initial generation (F 0 ) is recorded. Toxicity coefficients are determined, specifically the death rate (L 0 ) and the fertility rate (P 0 ). The physiological state of second generation daphnia (F 2 ) is recorded. Total mutagenic activity is calculated using the formula: &=f t /f c , where f t is the frequency of occurrence of lethal and sub-lethal mutations in the test, and f c is the frequency of occurrence of lethal and sub-lethal mutations in the control. The total mutagenic value is compared with isoeffective concentrations of reference mutagens and toxicants.
