abstract | FIELD: chemistry. n SUBSTANCE: composition contains a mixture of styrenated p-cresol and an optional co-stabiliser. The composition is liquid at room temperature, has viscosity of less than 40 Pa·s (40000 cP) at 25°C, exhibits acid number less than 0.1 mg KOH/g, and contains 2,6-distyrenated p-cresol assaying at 70% minimum by GC area. The mixture also contains monostyrenated p-cresol and tristyrenated p-cresol, each present in concentration ranging from about 1 to about 15% by GC area based on total area of the styrenated p-cresol. The mixture of the styrenated p-cresol is obtained through reaction of styrene and p-cresol in molar ratio from 1.85 to 2.1:1, respectively. The reaction is carried out in the presence of an acid catalyst at temperature from 40 to 150°C.
