FIELD: chemistry. n SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of converting ethylbenzene, involving a step for bringing mixed C8 aromatic hydrocarbon material containing ethylbenzene into contact with catalyst(s) containing at least one metal selected from group VII and group VIII metals in the presence of H 2 in order to convert said ethylbenzene to benzene. Said material contains C9-C10 aromatic hydrocarbons containing ethyltoluene in amount of not less than 1 wt % and not more than 20 wt %, where said ethyltoluene is converted to toluene simultaneously with said ethylbenzene conversion.
