abstract FIELD: chemistry. n SUBSTANCE: disclosed agent is a xanthine derivative of formula 1 n , where R 1 denotes CH 3 , R 2 denotes CH 3 ; R 3 denotes halogens: F,Cl, Br, I; R 4 denotes hydrogen; R 1 denotes CH 3 , R 2 denotes CH 3 ; R 3 denotes hydrogen, halogens: F, Cl, Br, I; R 4 denotes CH 2 COOH; R 1 denotes hydrogen, R 2 denotes CH 3 ; R 3 denotes halogens: F, Cl, Br, I; R 4 denotes CH 3 . The preferred compounds of the said agent are 8-chlorotheophylline, 8-bromotheophylline and theophylline-7-acetate. The invention also relates to a method of slowing down proliferation of tumour cells and a method of inducing differentiation in mouse melanoma B16-F10 cells.
