abstract FIELD: chemistry. n SUBSTANCE: method involves steps for reducing the terminal monosaccharide link of sialic acid to obtain a reduced monosaccharide link of sialic acid, hydrolysis of the saccharide to obtain a hydrolysate containing monosaccharide links. The saccharide contains monosaccharide links of sialic acid which are α 2→9 bonded, and a terminal monosaccharide link of sialic acid. Further, the ratio of the total amount of sialic acid to amount of the reduced sialic acid in the hydrolysate is determined.
