abstract | FIELD: physics. n SUBSTANCE: invention includes an optical telemetry system having a downhole oilfield probe, a single optical fibre, several electrodes, an optical circulator and a bypass optical fibre. An electrooptical modulator has a downhole substrate made from lithium niobate, a waveguide, an optional input/output device, several electrodes, an optical circulator and a bypass optical fibre. The downhole telemetry system has a surface database, a downhole optical telemetric container and a single-fibre optical interface. The downhole optical telemetric container has a waveguide, an optical input/output device, an optical circulator, several electrodes and a bypass optical fibre. The method which uses the device comprises steps on which electrical signals are received and modulated. Modulation involves steps on which light is received from a source through the input fibre, the light is modulated and transmitted through the waveguide and the modulated light is transmitted back through the fibre.
