abstract | FIELD: metallurgy; coating application. n SUBSTANCE: said utility invention relates to ceramic thermal barrier coating (TBC) and may be used during manufacture of turbine vanes or the surface of the gas turbine engine combustion chamber. The method involves thermal application of the ceramic thermal barrier coating containing at least two layers of powder particles onto a substrate or an intermediate binding coating between the substrate and the thermal barrier coating, by thermal spraying of the thermal barrier coating powder. The powder particles forming the layer adjacent to the substrate or the binding coating have a microstructure different to microstructure of the powder particles used for subsequent application of the second layer onto the substrate with the first layer already applied or the intermediate binding coating with the first layer already applied. Before the application of the first TBC layer, powder particles are used, with porosity lower than that of the powder particles used for subsequent application of the second layer onto the substrate with the first layer already applied. The first inner layer of the resulting thermal barrier coating has a microstructure different to that of its second external layer.
