abstract FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. n SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for preparing 4,4'-azobis-(4-cyanopentanol) used as an initiating agent in radical polymerization reaction. Method involves interaction of acetopropyl alcohol with hydrocyanic acid or its salts and hydrazine derivatives followed by oxidation of synthesized 4,4'-hydrazobis-(4-cyanopentanol) in acid medium. Oxidation is carried out in aqueous or aqueous-organic medium at temperature from 5 0 C to 25 0 C and at pH value of reaction mass 1-4 in the presence of bromine or bromine compounds or iodine with hydrogen peroxide or alkaline or earth-alkaline metal hypochlorite. Oxidation with hydrogen peroxide is carried out in the presence of catalysts among the group of tungsten, vanadium or molybdenum compounds.
