abstract 1. A method of functionalizing an amidofunctional polymer product, comprising the steps of: (a) preparing an amidofunctional polymer containing amide functionality and having a sufficiently high number average molecular weight, such that the polymer is solid at 25 ° C, a pressure of 1 atm and a relative humidity of 10% or less, (b) providing an amidofunctional polymer in the melt phase, wherein the melt phase further comprises a plasticizer present in an amount that does not solubilize the amidofunctional polymer in the solution phase, and (c) in the presence of a plasticizer, the interaction of the amidofunctional polymer in the melt phase with at least one reagent containing a labile amino component and at least one additional functionality in a manner effective for the formation of a polymer reaction product containing amidofunctionality and at least one additional functionality. 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the amidofunctional polymer obtained in step (a) contains primary amide groups. The method of claim 1, wherein the amidofunctional polymer obtained in step (a) is substantially linear. The method according to claim 1, wherein the amidofunctional polymer obtained in step (a) contains secondary amide groups. The method of claim 1, wherein the amidofunctional polymer obtained in step (a) is partially hydrolyzed. The method of claim 1, wherein the reaction product further comprises carboxylic functionality or its derivatives.
