A method for destroying keratin, comprising mixing at least 1 kg of keratin material with a protease and a reducing agent with a controlled oxygen content. 3. A method according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the reaction occurs in a closed system. A method according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the oxygen content is controlled in one of the following ways: by heating, by steam treatment, by adding nitrogen and by applying vacuum. A method according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the reducing agent is salts of sulfite (e.g., NaSO and NaHSO), bisulfite, dithionite, metabisulfite, sulfide, sulfur dioxide, DTT and β-mercaptoethanol. 6. A method according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the surfactant is also used in step i) of the method.
