abstract 1. A method comprising the steps in which tobacco is dissolved in an ionic liquid to produce a liquid tobacco composition, tobacco is regenerated to produce regenerated tobacco material, and regenerated tobacco material is isolated from the liquid tobacco composition. The method of claim 1, wherein the tobacco regeneration comprises a step in which a second liquid is added to the liquid tobacco composition. The method of claim 2, wherein the second liquid is water. A method according to any one of the preceding paragraphs, the method further comprising the step of removing one or more tobacco components from the liquid tobacco composition. The method of claim 4, wherein the removal of one or more of the components comprises the step of bringing the liquid tobacco composition into contact with tobacco-specific nitrosamine-absorbing material. The method of claim 4, wherein removing one or more of the components comprises the step of extracting one or more of the components from the liquid tobacco composition with a solvent for the one or more of the components. The method of claim 6, wherein the solvent for one or more components is adapted to extract a benzo [a] pyrene precursor. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the ionic liquid comprises an imidazolium salt. The method of claim 8, wherein the imidazolium salt is selected from the group consisting of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium salt, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium salt, and tris (2-hydroxyethyl) methylammonium methyl sulfate. The method of claim 9, wherein the ionic liquid is 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate.
