abstract 1. A method for producing 4-amino-5-fluoro-3-halogen-6- (substituted) picolinate of the formula I where W is Cl, Br or I. R is C-Calkyl, cyclopropyl, C-Calkenyl or phenyl substituted with 1- 4 substituents independently selected from halogen, Ci-Cialkyl, Ci-Ci-haloalkyl, Ci-Cialkoxy or Ci-Ci halogenoalkoxy; and R 1 is C 1 -C 6 alkyl or unsubstituted or substituted C 1 -Carylalkyl; which comprises the following steps: of formula B where R is as previously defined; b) amination of 4,5,6-trifluoropycolinate of formula B with ammonia to give 4-amino-5,6-difluoropycolinate of formula C where R is as previously defined; c) replacement of the fluorine substituent at 6 4-amino-5,6-difluoropyicolinate of formula C on iodine, bromine or x an op-substituent by treatment with a source of iodine, bromine or chlorine ions to produce 4-amino-5-fluoro-6-halogen-picolinate of formula D where X is Cl, Br or I, and R is as previously defined; d) halogenation of 4-amino -5-fluoro-6-halogen-picolinate of the formula D with a halogen source to produce 4-amino-3,6-dihalo-5-fluoro-picolinate of the formula E where W and X are independently Cl, Br or I, and R is as previously defined; (e) The coupling of a 4-amino-3,6-dihalo-5-fluoropicolinate of formula E with an aryl, alkyl or alkenyl metal compound of formula F where R is as previously defined and Met is a Zn-halide, Zn-R, tri- (C-C1-6 alkyl) tin, copper or B (OR) (OR), where R and R are independently hydrogen, C-C1-6 alkyl, or, taken together, form ethylene or propylene
