abstract | 1. A pet food composition containing the ingredient in an amount effective to give the composition an antimicrobial effect, wherein said ingredient has activity against microorganisms causing spoilage and is contained in the composition in an amount of from 0.1 to 3% by weight, where the composition is dry cat food or dry dog food, and where the ingredient is lactic acid. 2. The pet food composition of claim 1, wherein the composition has a pH of less than 5.5.3. Pet food composition according to claim 1 or 2, where the composition contains from 0.13% to 3% of the mass. lactic acid, and the pH of the composition is from 4 to 5.4. A method for producing a pet food composition comprising the following steps: a. pretreatment by mixing wet and dry ingredients at an elevated temperature to form a pasty mass for the granules b. extruding the paste for the pellets at high temperature and pressure c. drying the extruded granules and d. glazing the dried granules with liquid and dry external ingredients; where the ingredient that gives the composition an antimicrobial effect is applied to the granules in stages a and / or d in an amount of from 0.1 to 3% by weight of the composition, where the specified ingredient has activity against microorganisms that cause spoilage, the composition is a dry cat food or dry dog food, and where the ingredient is lactic acid. 5. The method according to claim 4, where the composition contains from 0.13 to 3% of the mass. lactic acid and has a pH of from about 4 to about 5.6.
