abstract 1. A pet food composition containing the ingredient in an amount effective to give the composition an antimicrobial effect, wherein said ingredient has activity against microorganisms causing spoilage and is contained in the composition in an amount of from 0.1 to 3% by weight, where the composition is dry cat food or dry dog food, and where the ingredient is lactic acid. 2. The pet food composition of claim 1, wherein the composition has a pH of less than 5.5.3.
