titleOfInvention REMOVING SILENE USING CHEMICAL OXIDATION AND BIOLOGICAL REDUCTION
abstract 1. A method of treating water containing reduced forms of selenium, the process comprising the steps of: a) oxidizing the reduced forms of selenium in water to form oxidized forms of selenium in water; b) recovering the oxidized forms of selenium in water using biological reduction to form a precipitate containing selenium, in water, and c) separation of water from sediment containing selenium. 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the reduced forms of selenium include selenocyanate. The method according to claim 2, wherein the oxidized forms of selenium comprise one or more forms selected from selenate and selenite. The method according to claim 3, wherein step a) comprises mixing a chemical oxidizing agent with water. The method according to claim 3, wherein the chemical oxidizing agent comprises one or more substances selected from NaOCl, KMnO, KFeO, NaSO or ClO. The method of claim 5, wherein steps b) and c) comprise passing water through a reactor containing a stationary film of microorganism-reducing selenium. The method according to claim 6, further comprising adding a nutrient to the water to provide a value of the redox potential (ORP) in the water in contact with the stationary film of -50 mV or less. A device for treating water containing reduced forms of selenium, comprising: a) a vessel for receiving treated water; b) supplying a chemical oxidizing agent; c) a system for mixing a chemical oxidizing agent with water in the vessel; and d) a reactor adapted to receive water from the vessel and flow it through a layer of medium.
