The method according to claim 3, where the compound of formula VIII is obtained by a method comprising reacting a compound of formula VII: with a mixture of the first base and tricalkylphosphonoacetate; and then reacting the resulting mixture with a second base. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the compound of formula VII is prepared by a process comprising reacting a compound of formula VI: with a base; and LG is Cl, Br, I, tosylate, brosylate, nosylate, mesylate or triflate. 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the compound of formula VI is prepared by a process comprising reacting a compound of formula V: with a reducing agent and a chiral oxazaborolidine. A method of obtaining a compound of formula Ib or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof: comprising reacting a compound of formula Ia: with (1) an activating agent and (2) a compound of formula IVa or a suitable salt thereof: 8. The method according to claim 7, wherein said activating agent is 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole.
