abstract 1. An aqueous antimicrobial composition containing an effective amount of an antimicrobial agent containing carrageenans, which are lambda carrageenans in an amount of at least about 50% dry weight of said carrageenans, where the rest of said carrageenans is at least one non-lambda carrageenan, as well as physiologically an acceptable water-soluble metal salt and an antiretroviral agent selected from the group consisting of non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and nucleoside in reverse transcriptase inhibitors. 2. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1, comprising a physiologically acceptable pH adjusting agent. The antimicrobial composition according to claim 1, containing a physiologically acceptable preservative. The antimicrobial composition of claim 2, wherein said physiologically acceptable pH adjusting agent is selected from the group consisting of acetate, citrate, and lactate buffers. The antimicrobial composition according to claim 4, wherein said acetate buffer contains a mixture of acetic acid and sodium acetate. The antimicrobial composition according to claim 4, wherein said citrate buffer contains a mixture of citric acid and sodium citrate. The antimicrobial composition according to claim 4, wherein said lactate buffer contains a mixture of lactic acid and sodium lactate. The antimicrobial composition according to claim 3, wherein said physiologically acceptable preservative contains methyl paraben. The antimicrobial composition according to claim 1, wherein said antiretroviral agent contains a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor.
