abstract 1. A method for sterilizing a gas or liquid, comprising contacting a microorganism in a gas or liquid with a material containing amorphous carbon having a sulfo group introduced into it. The method for sterilizing a gas or liquid according to claim 1, wherein the gas or liquid is passed through a column filled with a material containing amorphous carbon having a sulfo group introduced therein. The method for sterilizing a gas or liquid according to claim 1, wherein the gas or liquid is passed through a filter carrying an amorphous carbon-containing material having a sulfo group introduced therein. The method for sterilizing a gas or liquid according to claim 1, wherein the amorphous carbon-containing material having a sulfo group introduced therein is obtained by condensing and sulfonating an incompletely carbonized organic compound by heat treatment with sulfur trioxide or a sulfonating agent containing sulfur trioxide. The method for sterilizing a gas or liquid according to claim 1, wherein the material containing amorphous carbon having a sulfo group introduced into it is obtained by condensing and sulfonating at least one selected from the group of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons having 2 or more and 7 or less condensed aromatic rings, by heat treatment in concentrated or fuming sulfuric acid.6. A method for sterilizing a gas or a liquid according to claim 1, wherein a material containing amorphous carbon having a sulfo group introduced into it is obtained by introducing a sulfo group into an organic compound using heat treatment in concentrated or fuming sulfuric acid, while the material has the following
