abstract | 1. A solid catalyst component which is a product obtained by a process comprising (a) reacting a magnesium alkoxide with the formula Mg(OR)(OR) in which R and R are the same or different and each is an alkyl radical of 1 or more carbon atoms. to 10, with titanium tetrachloride, carried out in a hydrocarbon at a temperature of 50-100°C, (b) heat treatment of the reaction mixture obtained in step (a) at a temperature of from 110°C to 200°C for a period of time ranging from 3 to 25 hours, (c) separation and washing with hydrocarbon of the solid obtained in stage (b), and the mole ratio Cl/Ti for the above solid catalyst component exceeds 2.5.2. The solid catalyst component of claim 1, wherein the magnesium alkoxide is magnesium diethoxide and is used as a gel dispersion in a hydrocarbon medium. The solid catalyst component according to claim 1, wherein the interaction of the magnesium alkoxide with TiCl is carried out at a Ti/Mg mole ratio ranging from 1.5 to 4, at a temperature of from 60 to 90°C and for a period of time from 2 to 6 hours. 4. The solid catalyst component of claim 3 wherein the Ti/Mg molar ratio is in the range of 1.75 to 2.75.5. The solid catalyst component of claim 1, wherein the heat treatment in step (b) is carried out at a temperature in the range of 100°C to 140°C for a period of time in the range of 5 to 15 hours.
