A method of obtaining a compound derived from ketomalonic acid represented by the following general formula (2): in which R may be the same or different from each other and represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group that may be substituted, a cyclic alkyl group that may be substituted , an aromatic hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent, or an aromatic heterocyclic group which may have a substituent, and two Rs may be joined together to form a cyclic structure in de integral molecule, or its hydrate, by reacting a compound derived from malonic acid represented by the following general formula (1): wherein R are the same as described above, or a mixture thereof, with one or two or more chlorous acid compounds, selected from the group consisting of perchloric acid or a salt of perchloric acid, for the oxidation of a compound derived from malonic acid. 2. A method for producing a compound derived from ketomalonic acid or a hydrate thereof according to claim 1, wherein the chloride compound is a chloride salt. A method for producing a compound derived from ketomalonic acid or a hydrate thereof according to claim 1, wherein the compound of perchloric acid is a salt of an alkali metal and perchloric acid or a salt of an alkaline earth metal and perchloric acid.
