abstract | 1. An isolated, water-soluble polypeptide composition that is capable of stabilizing a polyurethane foam, where the composition has one or more of the following features: (a) an amide-I absorption band between about 1633 cm and 1680 cm, as determined by solid state IR Fourier spectroscopy FTIR; (b) an amide II band between approximately 1522 cmi 1560 cm, as determined by the solid state FTIR; (c) two distinct absorption bands of NH stretching vibrations of 1 ° amide with centers in the region of about 3200 cmi in the region of about 3300 cm FTIR solid state; (d) a pronounced cluster of protonated nitrogen nuclei, determined within the boundaries of the chemical shift N in the region of about 94 ppm and about 100 ppm, and within the boundaries of the chemical shift H in the region of about 7.6 ppm and about 8.1 ppm, as determined by liquid phase two-dimensional NMR proton-nitrogen interaction; (e) an average molecular weight of between about 600 and about 2500 Daltons; (f) the inability to stabilize an oil-in-water emulsion, which, when an aqueous solution containing 14 parts by weight of protein, dissolved or dispersed in 86 parts by weight of water, is mixed with 14 parts by weight of PMDI, this aqueous solution and PMDI form an unstable suspension that macroscopically dissolves into phases under static conditions over time e five minutes after mixing; (g) the water-soluble polypeptide composition is capable of stabilizing a polyurethane foam with respect to a polyurethane foam formed from the same starting composition lacking a water-soluble protein composition; or (h) a water soluble polypeptide composition according to |
