titleOfInvention AGENTS FOR OPTICAL VISUALIZATION
abstract 1. A method for in vivo optical imaging of tumor margins in a living subject known to have at least one such tumor, wherein: (1) an optical imaging contrast agent suitable for in vivo imaging is taken, wherein said contrast agent contains a conjugate of a synthetic polyethylene glycol polymer with a molecular weight of 22 to 40 kDa, with one or two Opt groups; is a biocompatible optical reporter group that can be detected directly or indirectly by optical imaging using light with a wavelength of 600-850 nm, and is selected from cyanine dye or benzopyrylium dye. The method according to claim 1, where the polymer is conjugated only with the group(s) Opt.3. The method of claim 1, wherein the conjugate has the formula I: where [POLYMER] is a synthetic polyethylene glycol polymer; X and X are attached to the ends of said polyethylene glycol polymer and independently represent a bond or group L; where L is a linker group of formula -(A)- where each A is independently -CR-, -CR=CR-, -C≡C-, -CRCO-, -COCR-, -NRCO-, -CONR-, -NR(C=O)NR-, - NR(C=S)NR-, -SONR-, -NRSO-, -CROCR-, -CRSCR-, -CRNRCR-, a C-cycloheteroalkylene group, a C-cycloalkylene group, a Sarylene group, or a C-heteroarylene group, an amino acid, or a sugar; wherein each R is independently selected from H, Calkyl, Alkenyl, Alkynyl, Alkoxyalkyl, or Chydroxyalkyl; m is an integer valued from 1 to 20
